At Sand you will find the best range of fairtrade clothing, jewellery and accessories in Cornwall. Recent additions to SAND's product range include household gifts and toys.

Buying local is another important element of sustainable living. Sand stocks local brands with high ethical and environmental standards; sharing our goals and supporting the Cornish economy. We always try and provide clear information in store and on the website so you know exactly what you are buying, if ever in doubt just ask.

The company founder Coll Faragher was a student of International Development http://www.uea.ac.uk/dev; a subject that looks at global poverty, trading relationships, human rights and natural resource management. Development can be seen as a process of expanding the real freedoms that people enjoy and Fair Trade is one such route to freedom. Coll has travelled widely around many of the place where his products are sourced including India, Nepal, Indonesia, Peru and of course his beloved homeland of Cornwall.

Coll's father Tony also helps to run the business and is a key member of the Wadebridge Renewable Energy Network (www.wren.uk.com). Tony has been a campaigner for Fairtrade and social justice for many years.   He previously ran Sunpower fairtrade in Liskeard, Cornwall.

1 % for the Planet

1% for the Planet is a growing global network of companies that donate 1% of their turnover (turnover not profit) to grassroots social and environmental causes around the world (www.onepercentfortheplanet.org). Sand has chosen to donate to The Cornwall Wildlife trust.

Cornwall Wildlife trust is involved in the many aspects of conserving Cornwall’s wildlife and wild places; this includes owning or managing 55 nature reserves in the county. We are so lucky to live in such a wild and beautiful area as Cornwall, and Sand, through our 1% for the planet donations wants to help preserve this for ourselves and future generations. Visit www.cornwallwildlifetrust.org.uk for more information.

Fairtrade Credentials

Fairtrade

This widely recognised logo belongs to the Fairtrade Foundation. Look for this logo on Sand's cotton products as it guarantees that small scale producers in developing countries receive a fair and stable price plus an additional premium which gives them the opportunity to develop their communities. Visit www.fairtrade.org.uk for more info.

World Fair Trade Organisation

WFTO is an internationally recognised organisation that aims to improve the livelihoods of disadvantaged producers, by linking and promoting Fair Trade organisations and speaking out for greater justice in World Trade. Find out more about their 10 standards of Fair Trade by visiting www.wfto.com.

The British Association for Fair Trade Shops

Sand is a member of the British Association of Fair Trade Shops (BAFTS). As a member we are committed to raising the profile of fair trade products on the high street.  As well as Sand itself being a member of the association, BAFTS recognises fair trade importers who work towards the internationally agreed definition of fair trade; Fair Trade is a trading partnership, based on dialogue, transparency and respect, that seeks greater equity in international trade. It contributes to sustainable development by offering better trading conditions to, and securing the rights of, marginalized producers and workers. Where you see the BAFTS logo next to our product it indicates that the importer has been recognised as working towards fair trade principles.  Visit www.bafts.org.uk for more information.

Environmental Credentials

Soil Association - Organic Standard

This Organic standard not only applies to the growing of the cotton, it also guarantees that the manufacturing processes meet Global Organic Textile Standards. So, if you see the mark beside the garment on this site, you can be assured that every step of the production process – from sowing the cotton seeds, to the dying process, to shipping a garment to the store – has been carefully inspected to ensure organic standards are met. Check www.soilassociation.org for further information.
